Common Sanctions for Alcohol Violations

Common Sanctions: Alcohol

These are minimum sanctions

Minor in Possession:

1st: Disciplinary Warning, Alcohol Education Workshop ($75 fee), Community Service Project, Parental Notification


2nd: Disciplinary Warning, AlcoholEdu sanction course or one-on-one alcohol education, $125 alcohol programming fee


3rd:Probation,BASICS-$150,40 hours of community service hours,$175 alcohol programming fee, Folllow-up meetings, parental notification if under 21


Public Intoxication:


1st: Probation or Warning depending on the severity, verification of court ordered alcohol classes, follow-up meetings, 25 hours community service or $125 alcohol programming fee.


2nd:Probation,BASICS-150 or verification of courtordered alchohol classes,follow-up meetings,40 community service hours or $200 alchohol programming fee, parental notification if under 21.

DUI:

1st: Probation, verification of court ordered alcohol classes, follow-up meetings with hearing officer,50 hours community service or $250 alcohol programming fee

2nd: Deferred Suspension,verification of court ordered classes, discretionary sanction -"Verification of Substance Abuse Program",50 community service hours or $250 alcohol programming fee, follow-up meetings, parental notification is under 21.

Fake ID: Capstone Character Class ($75 fee)

Open Container: Disciplinary Warning, Open Container Quiz, $50 alcohol programming fee and community service project.

Common Sanctions for Drug Violations

Common Sanctions: Drug Offenses


These are minimum sanctions:

Sale/Distribution or Felony Possession of Narcotics or Controlled Substances:

May result in Interim Suspension, full Suspension, or possibly Expulsion.

If it is determined during the investigative process that only a small amount was involved during the distribution, the following sanctions may apply:

  • Deferred suspension
  • Verification of your participation in and completion of, court ordered substance abuse classes, or an intense out-patient program.
  • Random drug screens throughout matriculation at UA
  • Community Service or Fine
  • Follow-up meetings throughout matriculation at UA

1st Use/Possession of Marijuana (misdemeanor)(If student is not going to court ordered classes)


  • Probation or deferred suspension( minimum of one year)
  • Marijuana 101 online course($40)
  • Random Drug Screenings are required by judicial affairs
  • BASICS ($150)
  • Capstone Character Workshop
  • Community Service (30 hrs) or $150 fines
  • Follow-up Meetings
  • Parental Notification if under 21

A second drug offense is grounds for suspension from UA


Failed Drug Screen

  • Deffered Suspension
  • Drug Free Compliance Agreement
  • Marijuana 101 online course ($40)
  • BASICS($150)
  • Follow-up meeting with hearing officer
  • Retested 90 days after failed drug test
  • Parental Notification if under 21
Other Common Sanctions

Common Sanctions: Other Offenses

These are minimum sanctions:

Parental Notification:

The University of Alabama provides notification to parents of students under the age of 21 of violations of the University's alcohol and drug policies. This notification is in the form of a letter.

Failure to Appear:

If you fail to show for a scheduled appointment with Judicial Affairs, you will be charged a $25 fee.

Throwing Objects at UA Sporting Events:

  • 1st Offense: Loss of ticket privileges to that sports' events for three (3) consecutive games (to roll over to next season if applicable), Capstone Character Class ($75 fee)
  • 2nd Offense: INDEFINITE loss of ticket privileges for that sports' events.
  • 3rd Offense: Loss of ticket privileges for ALL UA sporting events during remainder of student's academic career.
RIAA SANCTIONS

First instance of copyright infringement:

  • Warning Letter Sent to Student from Seebeck via email
  • Office of Judicial Affairs receives notification of the incident.

Sanctions:

  • Users network portal is deactivated
  • User must send a reply stating steps they have done to remove programs and files from their computer.

Second instance of copyright infringement:

  • Warning Letter Sent to Student from Seebeck via email
  • Office of Judicial Affairs receives notification of the incident.
  • Office of Judicial Affairs issues student a summons letter for Code of Student Conduct Violation.
  • Users network portal is deactivated

Sanctions:

  • Disciplinary Warning
  • Educational Report or Class
  • Verification from Seebeck that software and files have been removed (student must take their computer to the Helpdesk and pay a $70 fee to have their computer checked. Once this is done Seebeck will forward verification to Judicial Affairs.)
  • Once sanctions are complete the user's network portal will be turn back on.

Third instance of copyright infringement:

  • Warning Letter Sent to Student from Seebeck via email
  • Office of Judicial Affairs receives notification of the incident.
  • Office of Judicial Affairs issues student a summons letter for Code of Student Conduct Violation.
  • Users network portal is deactivated

Sanctions:

  • The type of sanction varies according to the facts of the incident. Sanction can range from probation to limited or loss of computer privileges.
